Learning new things is always good, but, if you don't know your Borg from your hentai, you could get
into trouble fast.
Here is where we'll do our best to explain things that you may want some clarification on.
Anime - Originally, anime referred almost exclusively to a style of Japanese animation. Over the years, though, it has
come to mean any type of animated video.
Borg - A shortened term for "Cyborg," a human who has had body parts replaced with mechanical equivalents.
Also the name of a race of cybernetically enhanced humanoids in the Star Trek universe.
Bronie - From the Urban Dictionary - A male fan of the series, "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.
" in general use, it refers to fans of the 'My Little Pony' shows/movies.
Clockpunk - A subset of Steampunk focusing on clockwork technology. Everything involves springs, gears, and levers.
Con - Short for convention.
Cyberpunk - The first of the "punk" genres, this style is set in the near-future. Clothing is post-modern and
typically very chic. Technology is microcomputers and highly advance cybernetic implants, or bioware.
Dieselpunk - Similar to Steampunk, but the era of clothing and technology is from the post-WWI to WWII era (typically the mid
1930s to early 1940s).
Ecchi - (From Wikipedia) The English use of "hentai" is more similar to the
way the Japanese use the slang term H, or ecchi, which refers to any sexually explicit content or behaviour.
Ecchi is simply the spelling-out of the Japanese pronunciation of the letter H. The origins of this term are
uncertain, but it may be a shortened form of hentai used as a polite codeword in the 1960s.
"H" in Japan is now broadly used to refer to all sexual content or activity) So, "H manga" are manga
with sexual content. Recently, the term "ero", short for "erotic" but closer in meaning to
"porn", is now used more often instead of "H".
Fangirl/Fanboy/Fanboi - Typically used as derogatory terms to describe someone completely obsessed with a particular show,
character, or real life person.
Fantasy - The classic 'knights & dragons' type of story writing. Wizards, damsels in distress and treasures make
up the world of Fantasy storytelling.
Furry - A fantasy culture involving the anthropomorphihism of animal. costumes range from true animal form to humans
with ears and tails.
Glomping - Think full-contact hugging.
Hentai - (From Wikipedia) is a Japanese word that, in the West, is used when
referring to sexually explicit or pornographic comics and animation, particularly Japanese anime, manga and computer games
(see Japanese pornography). In Japan it can be used to mean "metamorphosis" or "abnormality". The word
"hentai" has a negative connotation to the Japanese culture, and is commonly used to mean "sexually
perverted".
In Japanese the word hentai is a kanji compound of hen meaning "change" "weird" or
"strange" and tai meaning "attitude" or "appearance". The term is used as a
shortened form of the phrase hentai seiyoku, or "sexual perversion". In slang, hentai is used as
an insult meaning roughly "pervert" or "weirdo". The term is not often applied to pornography in Japan.
Instead, terms such as 18-kin (18?, literally "18-prohibited") meaning "prohibited to those not yet
18 years old", and seijin manga (???? "adult manga") are used when referring to pornography.
The English letters AV are also used, standing for adult video.
Manga - Japanese storytelling in the form of sequential art. Similar to a graphic novel or novellum.
Otaku - slang, the Japanese equivalent of 'geek'. A term for someone who has an obssesive interest, particularly
(but not limited to) anime, manga or Japanese video games. In Japan, it is usually considered an insult, but American
anime fans have adopted it as a way of identifying themselves.
Rave - A dance event featuring electronic-based music, intense light shows and high-energy dancing.
Raver/Ravergirl - People who dress in the Raver style. Male fashion is pants/shorts, frequently no shirt, and tennis
shoes. Female styles feature ultra-short skirts, tank tops or mid-riff t-shirts, fishnet stockings, and just about any
style footware. Accessories for both sexes include glow sticks/strings, powered L.E.D. bracelets, belts, buttons,
earings, headgear, hula hoops, or lightup balls on ropes for poi dancing.
Sci-Fi - Short for Science Fiction. This style of story writing features technology and futuristic settings.
Shower - (Google definition) washing yourself by standing upright
under water sprayed from a nozzle.
Soap - (Google definition) a cleansing agent made from the salts
of vegetable or animal fats
Splatterpunk - Related to the Horror genre, Splatterpunk focuses on the gore and grotesque.
Steampunk - A genre of Science Fiction set in Victorian times. Clothing is classic Victorian and equipment is
designed using steam power as the highest technology. Sub-genres include Clockpunk and Teslapunk.
Teslapunk - A subset of Steampunk focusing on the high-voltage technology designed by Nikola Tesla. Think plasma
globes and Jacob's Ladders.
Yaoi - Also known as "Boys' Love," is a Japanese pop-culture word for female-oriented (written by females,
targeting a female audience) fiction that focuses on male-male relationships. In America, this has also come to
include bara, which is targeted to the gay male audience.
Yuri - A Japanese word that refers to female-female relationships in anime and manga. Yuri is also a popular female
name, though there is no correlation between a woman named Yuri and her roll in a given story.
